Can elementary school students learn about evolution?

Evolution

Learning about biology can be difficult. We are studying how children can learn about evolution through reading picture books. In this study, children in elementary school and their parents answer questions about evolution in an online session. After a week, they return, read a picture book about evolution, and answer more questions. We recently finished this study and hope to have results to share soon!

How can children learn about illness at home?

COVID

Children learn about the world through many ways, including reading picture books with their parents. In this study, we are researching how children, ages 5 to 8, learn about COVID-19 through reading different books, and how the features of these books affect learning. Children in the study participate in two 45 minute sessions over Zoom. The sessions are a month apart. In these sessions, we will ask children questions about viruses and illness. They will also read a book about illness with a caregiver. Families will get a physical copy of the book to read in-between the two sessions. If you are interested in participating, please send us an email at crecelab@ucsc.edu.
